The state of Indiana is suing a former Randolph County school treasurer to try to recover more than $39,000 it says she stole from a school corporation. Indiana’s Attorney General Greg Zoeller filed suit in Randolph County against Sharon Lankford, who was treasurer for Union School Corporation from 2006 to 2009. He alleges Lankford paid for personal expenses with school funds, purchased items with school funds that the school never received, overpaid herself on salary, and underpaid for health insurance premiums. The lawsuit also asks the courts to immediately freeze Lankford’s assets. Lankford is also accused of theft in Delaware County for the time she spent as school treasurer at Yorktown Community Schools. A State Board of Accounts audit says Lankford has already paid back that money. Zoeller says since 2009, his office has filed almost 40 lawsuits across the state to recover public funds.
