Plan to save Anderson’s Wigwam ends unsuccessfully

A plan to save Anderson’s Wigwam Gymnasium has not panned out for the city.  Michael Mullen of Brown County recently sent a proposal to Anderson Community Schools, saying he would buy the gym and use it to form an all-Native American basketball team.  The Herald Bulletin  reports today that Mullen no longer wants the gymnasium.  After touring the Wigwam earlier this week, Mullen tells the newspaper that the 9,000 seat arena is too big.  This is the second snag in Mullen’s plans.  Officials of the American Basketball Association have said they would not sanction Mullen’s team.  They say they want to bring another team to Anderson, but would not use the Wigwam as the team’s home because of the cost to maintain the gym.  ACS will close the Wigwam this summer as a budget-saving measure.
