Union members rally at Statehouse for labor rights

Thousands gathered at the Indiana Statehouse yesterday to protest labor and education bills… and to show support for House Democrats.  Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Brandon Smith reports.

Though the bulk of the rally crowd came from around Indiana, there were protesters from Chicago, Louisville, Cincinnati and Wisconsin.  Indianapolis Laborers Union member Kenny Allen says he couldn’t stay away.

But at least one member of the crowd was there to support Republicans.  A man named Ron, who didn’t give his last name for fear of retribution, says public unions are hurting the taxpayer.

The non-union engineer from Carmel says his signs were taken from him and torn apart.  Indiana State Troopers only received one report of violence from a Statehouse worker.  They made no arrests.
