Anderson school board to consider closing Wigwam again

The school board in Anderson this evening will again decide whether to close the Wigwam gymnasium.  Anderson schools superintendant Felix Chow has recommended that the Wigwam be closed.  He says closing the 9,000 seat arena would save $550,000 dollars now, and the price of major maintenance like a roof repair in the immediate future.  In 2009, the school board voted to keep the Wigwam open.  Since then, Anderson Community Schools has closed eight school buildings and laid off almost 100 staff members.  And Anderson Community Schools tells the Herald Bulletin that it has recently sent out 140 preliminary layoff notices to teachers.  The school board will meet in the Anderson High School auditorium tonight at 6 pm.
