Protestors supporting Planned Parenthood picketed the Muncie office of Representative Mike Pence today. The 6th District Congressman has authored a bill that would take federal funding away from the family planning organization. More than twenty protestors stood outside Pence’s Muncie office. Several women carried large, pink signs proclaiming “I Stand With Planned Parenthood.” Pence says organizations like Planned Parenthood use the federal tax dollars they receive to fund abortions. His bill would zero out what’s called Title Ten family planning funding for these agencies. Betty Cockrum is the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana. In a January interview with IPR, she said the organization uses federal dollars — called Title X family planning funds — only for preventative health and family planning services.
Pence’s spokesman, Matt Lloyd, says that the Congressman’s bill would not cut a dime from Title X funding. Lloyd said Pence “simply believes that the nation’s largest abortion provider should not also be the largest recipient of federal funding under Title X.” This is the second Congress where Pence has introduced a bill to defund the organization.
