The proposed elimination of township government that is before the legislature is a remaining recommendation of the Kernan-Shephard Report on Local Government Reform. Governor Mitch Daniels has again put township reform on his legislative agenda, and will partake in Wednesday’s forum.
Former Supreme Court Justice Theodore Boehm will also be there and supports the change to reduce layers of local government. Boehm says, “When you have over a thousand units of government, you’re going to get wide varieties of systems and wide differences in level of performance and that’s not right. I mean, people ought to be getting poor relief or fire protection at the same level throughout the state.”
Boehm says supporters of the current township government model will also attend the forum that’s being sponsored by the Lacy Leadership Association.
