Indiana Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman will not run for governor in 2012. In a written statement released today, Skillman said that a recent physical exam revealed minor health issues. She says she has decided it would be best to avoid the additional stress of a gubernatorial campaign. She says the health issues won’t interfere with her duties as lieutenant governor, but didn’t disclose what the problem was. Skillman is a former state senator from Bedford and has served as an elected official for 34 years. Because term limits bar current Governor Mitch Daniels from running again, Skillman’s announcement leaves the Republican slot open for a possible run by Indiana Congressman Mike Pence. Pence is said to be considering a gubernatorial or presidential run in 2012.
