AFL-CIO wants Indiana senators to fight for unemployment benefits

The Indiana AFL-CIO workers’ union today urged Senators Dick Lugar and Evan Bayh to help Congress extend unemployment benefits to Hoosier workers.  Union president Nancy Guyott and others delivered a petition with more than 1,200 signatures to the senators’ downtown Indianapolis offices.  Guyott says the petition is an appeal for the 90,000 Hoosiers who will lose their benefits by Christmas.  Gary Newcom is a union electrician from Indianapolis who’s been out of work since May.  He told reporters that without those benefits, his family’s financial struggles will get worse.

Guyott says Congress has never cut benefits with this many people out of work.  Indiana’s current unemployment rate is 9.9 percent.
