Veterans’ Day 2010

Wiechmann — Veterans’ Day 2010

SOUND:  21 gun salute and TAPS fade down…

An honor guard salutes fallen veterans on the Ball State campus.

Indiana is remembering those Hoosiers who served in the armed forces today with events all across the state.

According to the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs, nearly 550,000 Hoosiers are military service veterans. Seventy-five Hoosiers have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Also this Veterans’ Day, an 87-year-old northwest Indiana man has been awarded the Legion of Honour, France’s highest military distinction.  Joseph Longa of Dyer fought in the Battle of the Bulge.  The award is usually reserved for French citizens… but in 2004, French president Jacques Chirac opened the award to American World War II veterans who had fought and made sacrifices for France. The Associated Press says that more than 100 U.S. veterans have been awarded the distinction in the last two years.  Longa was knighted as a chevalier of the Legion of Honour by current French president Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday.
